The APPG was delighted to host our second event on the consultation to the Agriculture Bill’s Command Paper, on May 1st in Parliament.
To introduce the event we had presentations by Peter Melchett (Policy Director, Soil Association) and Lucy Bjorck (Senior Policy Officer, RSPB) on what they considered to be the main areas of concern in the Command Paper and future UK agricultural policy, followed by discussion from the floor.
We had a great turnout – several Lords and MPs were in attendance including David Drew (Labour, Shadow Farming Minister) and Lord Cameron of Dillington (Chair of the APPG on Agriculture for Food and Development), as well as representatives from organisations including the Soil Association, WWF, The A Team, the PFLA and the French embassy.
The debate we had was productive and interesting – many good ideas were put forward which will be informing our submission to the consultation.
Using the information we’ve received over our two events we will now be finalising our submission. The consultation’s deadline is 8th May and we would strongly encourage everyone to make a submission. The Agriculture Bill represents a truly once in a generation opportunity to re-shape UK food and farming policy and now is the time to lobby the Government to implement the necessary policies to ensure that the UK’s agricultural sector is sustainable and environmentally friendly.
