On the 21st March 2018, the APPG on Agroecology hosted a roundtable with key advisors and Parliamentarians, to inform and bring together the key themes for our submission to the consultation on the Agriculture Bill’s Command Paper (which you can access here).
The discussion was very productive, with representatives present from several key organisations, as well as many Parliamentarians – some officers of the group and others entirely new faces!
Key issues that came up included the nature of the post-Brexit system of Common Agriculture Policy (CAP) payments and the meaning of ‘public money for public goods’, as well as how best to reward farmers for beginning and improving sustainable farming practices.
Over the coming weeks the APPG will be synthesising the themes raised during the roundtable into a written submission to the consultation. A second, larger meeting with stakeholders and Parliamentarians will be held at the beginning of May to finalise the report.
The consultation on the Command Paper – which will be followed by an Agricultural Bill later this year – is a once in a generation opportunity to reshape food and farming policy in the UK. We strongly urge all organisations to submit to the consultation independently as well.
